Hello. This is a Peugeot 504 Coupe, a car we have been discussing a lot around these parts lately. To be more precise this is a factory press photography of the 1973 model. I am completely head-over-heels with this car, and the fact I have to research the type for work purposes is just fuel to the fire.
In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s there were quite a lot of competition in the European Coupé market. At least i think there was, and with half an hour of browsing wikipedia, I already got quite a few models, that could have been cross-shopped.
Alfa Romeo 105/115 Coupé, several models up to 1974
Fiat Dino Coupé & Cabriolet (1966-73)
Fiat 124 Coupé (1967-75)
Fiat 130 Coupé (1971-77)
Ford Granada Fastback Coupé (1972-77)
Mercedes W114 Coupé (1969-76)
Opel Commodore (1967-71 „A”, 1971-77 „B”)
Your task, if you are ready to take it on, is to find me more. I want, no, I need every Coupé available in Europe at this time, that someone willing to drive a 4cyl Peugeot might have considered. No, the Rolls-Royce Corniche and the Ferrari Daytona don’t fit this category.
Go!
Before I forget, the 504 also had a Convertible version. Here it is, in it’s natural habitat (factory photography)

French cars have always fascinated me; they aren't sold in my country. I know they aren’t the fastest or most reliable... but they have so much style!

I don’t have much to add in the coupe department, but I was drooling all over
this car
earlier today (technically yesterday). So cheap too.
Well, maybe the Mercedes w114/w115 coupe could be a comparison.
edit: I linked 4 different pictures but when I post I see the same one 4 times. Press edit and the original 4 reappear. Kinja’d...

Well, the Jensen Interceptor was Assembled in Britain, and the design was Italian, so does that count? (here’s my ‘73 on the day I pulled it from the garage, before and after a wash)

I think the 125 Samatha was too low-volume to feature as competitor, after all the 504 Coupé sold more than 20.000 examples. The Audi and the Taunus are great suggestions, thanks!

I know they aren’t all that sporty by todays’ standard, but i would say the Capri and its arch-rival, the Opel Manta were marketed as sports cars, and not as elegant GTs, like the 504.

Oh yes the Interceptor is completely European, and my criteria was available in Europe anyway, not made in EU. An Interceptor is V8, though, isn’t it? Price and engine size would put that at least one category higher for me.

That’s pretty much perfect. Go and do it, so i can envy you :-)

Oh man, that’s an impressive list. Some of the cars on it are probably too sporty (by 1970s standard) to be directly comparable, as the 504 was marketed as an elegant GT, but even with that in mind i should be keeping
Audi 100 S Coupe
Isuzu 117 Coupe (these seem to have sold four times as many that the 504!!!)
Lancia Flavia 2000 Coupe HF
Mazda RX-4 (was this even available in Europe?)
Datsun 180Y (keeping this as the Z is the sports car)
Reliant Scimitar
Sunbeam Alpine
Toyota Celica
Triumph Stag
cheers!

Technically the Stag was a convertible of course, albeit with a hard top

I did think that but decided it was too good to leave out!

No worries :) I’m not certain they did sell the RX-4 in Europe actually, or at least I’ve never seen one...
If you want to go a bit upmarket with the V6 504 coupe it expands it to a couple more:
E9 2800 CS
Alfa 2600 Sprint
Mercedes 280SL
Citroen SM?
Fiat 130 Coupe
Jaguar XJ4.2C
Toyota Celica Supra
Oh and I forgot the Volvo P1800!

I can’t, I just bought something else. Not for me but for your namesake. I’ve got six cars now, that’ll do for now. I’ll have to thin the herd first, I live in an apartment.

Now that I’ve got your attention, can you diagnose this sound? It started after I exited the highway after a 200 km trip.

It was Aston Martin money when it was new, but mine is actually going up for sale as soon as I get the gas tank back in. Only actual problem with it. I put a new fuel pump in it, new carb, lines, etc. It’ll run great then it’ll suck some varnish up, I’m just tired of dealing with it so I’m having the tank steam cleaned. 33k original miles, and it used to be a California car before it was shipped over to CT in 1989 and never re-registered, stored in a dry garage for the interim. I actually had to do a vin verification for it to register it. If your price range is somewhere inbetween $15-20k, it’ll be for sale, ebay, BaT, DT, not sure yet. Think I’ll extend the offer to oppos and jalops before it goes up for auction anywhere though.

I’m really not much of a mechanic, but that sounds like a belt, and there should be at least two in a BX. Did it rain while you were on the highway?
